The Science of Darkness

Your body reads light — even with your eyes closed.

Eyelids are thinner than they feel. A streetlight, a screen left on, the grey at 5 a.m. — the light still gets in, and the night you think you're having isn't quite the one your body needs.

In one study at Cardiff University (Sleep, 2023), ninety-four adults wore an eye mask while sleeping for a week. With light blocked, they showed better memory encoding and greater alertness the next day. The researchers also found that the benefit was linked to time spent in slow-wave sleep.

Most masks only get you partway there — they leak light at the nose, or press on your eyes all night. So we asked one question: how completely can the light be erased, without your face paying for it?

BEYOOL is cut from 22-momme mulberry silk — dense enough to seal the dark, smooth enough to leave no drag on your lashes. Its contour arches over your eyes, holding the black close while lifting the pressure away.

Not a cure — we won't pretend otherwise. Just the most complete darkness we knew how to make, in the most beautiful material we could put against your skin.
